Frank Zito is a deeply disturbed man, haunted by the trauma`s of unspeakable childhood abuse. And when these horrific memories begin to scream inside his mind, Frank prowls the seedy streets of New York City to stalk and slaughter innocent young women. Now Frank has begun a relationship with a beautiful photographer, yet his vile compulsions remain. These are the atrocities of a human MONSTER!
Directed by William Lustig, who also directed Maniac Cop and Vigilante and featuring landmark gore effects from the master of gore Tom Savini, this notorious classic was censored all over the world for it`s graphic violence. Joe spinell, who was the co-writer/co-producer and who also starred in Rocky, The Godfather and Taxi, plays the starring role as Frank Zito and has done an excellent job at portraying the insanities of a deranged lunatic.
One of my favorite parts in the film is when two young lovers are making out in a car and one spots Frank peeping at them through the window. The suspense builds and then Frank suddenly appears in front of the car and blows the guys head clean off in one of the best head explosions I`ve have ever seen!
Digitally re-mastered by Anchor Bay with an all new 5.1 Dolby Digital sound track Maniac has never sounded and looked so good, so if you have not got a copy yet, I advise you to leg it to your nearest film shop and buy a copy of one of the most deranged films ever made.
